CHICHESTER BASED JELLYROLL WORKSHOP BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN YOUR CHILD THROUGH DANCE DRAMA AND SINGING

Jellyroll children's theatre workshop, with its unique formula of fun and an encouraging environment is now in its eighth successful year in Chichester.
We, at Jellyroll, want to give our students - your children - a great head start in life through dance drama and singing. We want them to have fun too. We are primarily interested in accessing and unleashing their potential, boosting their self confidence and raising their self esteem? Skills learned through participating and performing in a secure and fun environment can really help to prepare them to be more dynamic in their lives, oh yes, and its fun.
Drama, dance and singing are taught with warmth, humour and invaluable experience.
We are the only children's dance workshop, children's drama workshop, and singing school whose teachers have professional backgrounds. Our main aim is to develop and boost confidence through learning, challenge and socialising in a creative environment. We believe that when children are having fun they learn better and when they feel more confident they are more open to learning the things that perhaps don’t come as easily to them. The boost in confidence is quite apparent. We are thrilled to have had many fantastic testimonials to this effect. Children flourish and blossom in such an environment.

Taking it all in!
Classes are quite small, and the three-hour session is uniquely themed and structured so that we all have the added satisfaction of trying out what they have learned in all three mediums, all together, at the end of the morning if we want to. No other school offers this unique element, which extends pupils knowledge and skills even more by introducing the concept of combining singing with dancing, or singing with drama.
Music, elocution, comedy, performance, public speaking, poetry and drama are no longer part of the mainstream curriculum. Cultural knowledge, and exposure to a wide range of styles, music, rhythms, and mediums is sadly not covered enough in most of our schools. Jellyroll is not only about learning drama techniques, harmony, rhythm, choreography and dance; the cultural themes are carefully chosen to bring a rich and enlightening experience to the children. We want to see the children discover parts of themselves that are not drawn upon in school. They have the freedom to express and experiment with these lost skills and the positive attitude and outlook is enriched week after week.

Through this intelligently planned combination Jellyroll will teach children many vital life skills whilst having a brilliant time. Undoubtedly we feel that children should have fun, and in the age of technology physical activity is even more important to keep their bodies healthy too. But ultimately our main focus is the development of self- esteem, confidence and individual potential.

TEACHING PROFESSIONALS
JOANNE SMITH - Born in London, Jo originally trained as a Montessori teacher which as nearly everyone knows is one of the most respected systems in infant care and education. Apart from this she has an interesting and adaptable past in areas relevant to both the physical and creative elements of Jellyroll. Physical know how and inspiration are essential when it comes to devising fun things for children to participate in. Keeping children on the move is really important too, never more so than now with computers in most homes, an irresistible lure to habit forming sedentary lifestyles. For a several years Jo taught sailing in Mauritius and Bali (well if you're going to get wet it might as well be in warm tropical waters). This experience made her aware that health and self discipline are are set down in childhood. Believe it or not, sailing to South Africa she was shipwrecked and this taught her another valuable lesson in self dependency. For a while she was Production Director for Which Magazine SA. She then worked in South African television producing a popular game show. Whilst involved in the itinerant media business she married a record producer and participated in his recording studio.

They then moved to the South of France where they set up another recording studio. When her marriage failed she returned to the UK with two small children and started a business producing box framed art. She did some large projects for the catering industry and still continues to take commissions. Meanwhile she started Jellyroll to help support her daughter's education and development with amazing results. In fact both her daughter and son are active participants in Jellyroll. Jo also runs Touch Type Read and Spell courses for dyslexic children and adults. She is involved with the Arundel festival running their festivities office on a part time basis, setting up and co-ordinating the 10 day programme of festivities. Just occasionally she manages to kick her feet up and rest but as you can see, Jo's an achiever and is never still for very long!
 
EMMA WYNTER Emma trained from the age of three at The Arnould School in Surrey (Ballet, jazz, stage modern, tap and Greek). She left school to go straight into a show – Dick Emery, and then went on to work with Rolf Harris, Larry Grayson, Freddie Starr and Lonnie Donnegan in panto and summer seasons in Bournemouth and Blackpool.
Emma spent two years in London’s West End in shows including “Hello Dolly” with Carol Channing at the Drury Lane Theatre; and “Beyond the Rainbow” at the Adelphi. Television and Commercial work followed. “Specials” at Thames TV with Mike Yarwood, Bernie Winters, Bennie Hill and the Two Ronnies (BBC), various shows at Granada and Yorkshire TV’s 3-2-1 for many seasons as the resident dance group “Lipstick”. She became part of the re-formed “Pans People” with Dee Dee Wilde and Sara Brightman, and they travelled abroad to exotic locations many and various. Emma began teaching whilst still performing professionally in London’s Dance Attic Studios (Putney). She moved to West Sussex with husband, singer Mark Wynter and produced three very musical children! Whilst building on her teaching career locally, she trained in Pilates and Body Conditioning classes.

She then met Jo in the school playground, and with both their skills developed Jellyroll Workshop.
They are about to celebrate five fantastic years of their partnership!
Emma has just finished choreographing “Half a Sixpence” for W.O.A.D.S in Walberton for Madeleine Donan, who she first worked with on “The Barchester Chronicles” (Chichester Festival Theatre) in 2000.
 

Nikki Stratfords

NIKKI STRATFORDS has been trained as a dancerfrom a young age, she started at Stonelands School of Ballet in Hovewhere she had full time classical training and academic work till shepassed her G.C.S.E's. After finding her passion for dance shefurthered her training at Body Work Musical theatre college inCambridge and did a 3 year diploma course.
After graduating Nikkiwas offered a place onboad P&O's Ocean Village where she did 3contracts with the company as their singer/dancer.ßHer resent return has bought her back home to Chichester where she looks forward to joining the Jollyroll team.

 

 

 

Jedd Owen-Ellis Clark
JEDD OWEN-ELLIS CLARK is a vocal coach, a singing teacher, singer, songwriter and musician. Hestarted early in life as a chorister, and had the opportunity to sing at many of the
great English cathedrals. Grounded by an appreciation of classical and choral music, Jedd then decided to do something very different and joined a rock group! A good musical education is never forgotten, however, and so over the next ten years he worked in a variety of roles, from a singer to a performance artist, a dancer and a model. He’s written, recorded and released albums solo and with groups, sang for Princess Diana, made pop videos in Amsterdam, and recently won a piano award at the 2008 Chichester Music Festival. For the last ten years he has worked as a vocal performance coach – promoting good vocal habits, strengthening and liberating voices; helping singers sing higher, actors speak louder and clearer, working on anything from accent and dialect to audition and studio technique.

He has a recording studio, where he teaches from, also studying voice further; in his spare time writing and recording songs, he is presently working on a score for a film. The last ten years has seen him play actor, singer/songwriter, and vocal coach on regional musical theatre youth tours. The ability to work with any age, any situation has always been his forte; from swimming pool teachers’ advice on being heard above the mêlée of poolside noise - to working with delivery of speeches at important social functions; from helping actors to be heard at the back of the theatre - to helping teenage student to get into theatre schools, working on songs and monologues to ‘round off’ their character. He says “ … stage confidence isn’t just something you get given – you get it when you do something right … “.

He inspires children to speak and sing clearly - and be ‘grown-up' about performance, and encourages grown-ups to have a more child-like playfulness in their approach to voice – spoken and sung.


Renee Bakker

RENEE BAKKER was born on a stormy night in Barberton, South Africa in 1981. Her parents had emigrated from Holland in 1979 to start a new life, and transformed an area of wilderness and bush into the successful farm that is known today as Renee Farms. Renee means ‘born again’.She was educated at A.C.E. and Penryn College, and on completing her schooling, she went on to do a BA in Drama and Acting at the Waterfront Theatre School in Cape Town. Leaving Africa in 2003 Renee went on to the less bohemian Guildford School of Arts in sunny England. Here she achieved a post-graduate diploma in Acting, graduating in 2004. She has her Licentiate Diploma in Drama Theory, an Associate Diploma in Teaching, dance qualifications in tap and jazz, and a silver grade in stage combat. Renee also speaks three languages and has worked with children in South Africa, Romania, and Holland. In the U.K she has taught various drama workshops for schools in Guildford, Leatherhead, Dorking and all over London.
In Guildford she met her present husband, and it was on return to SA that she married him, on the mountain overlooking Renee Farms. She continues to pursue her career in drama, performing, teaching and directing. Renee has done various adverts for the phone company Orange, in English and Dutch. She has also performed in Semi-Monde, Canterbury Tales, Wotcha Will, A Life Less Ordinary, Oklahoma and Killing Innocence.
